Dena Karari, a dual citizen of the United States and Iran, has been released from Iranian detention, announced former US President Donald Trump. Karari, who had been held since December 2024, is now reportedly safe and in good condition outside of Iran. Trump shared the news on Truth Social, noting that her release was a goodwill gesture from Iran.
Jared Genser, Karari’s lawyer, confirmed her safety and indicated that she is currently on her way back to the United States. Genser acknowledged the Trump administration’s role in negotiating her release and expressed gratitude for their efforts.
Karari’s detainment began after she traveled to Iran to visit her family in 2024. However, she was later prevented from leaving the country. In 2025, following military actions by the US and Israel against Iran, Iranian authorities accused her of espionage, leading to her prolonged detention.
