Amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States, China has stepped in to advocate for diplomatic solutions. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, where he urged both nations to exercise restraint and re-engage in diplomatic negotiations.
Wang emphasized that the ongoing conflict is detrimental not only to the nations directly involved but also to the international community at large. He called on Iran and the United States to revisit their previous memorandum of understanding and renew talks based on existing agreements. The Chinese foreign minister also highlighted the significance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, stressing that stability in this crucial waterway is vital for global energy supplies and international trade routes.
In addition to addressing the US-Iran tensions, Wang expressed concern about the potential for conflict to spill over into other regions, such as Yemen and the Red Sea. He encouraged countries in the region to resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiations, aiming to prevent further escalation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi responded positively to China’s diplomatic push, indicating that Tehran is willing to return to diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests. He reaffirmed Iran’s recognition of the existing US-Iran memorandum as valid and expressed openness to working with regional countries to enhance relations and security.
Furthermore, Araghchi welcomed China’s proposals aimed at strengthening peace and security in the Middle East, expressing Tehran’s interest in deepening cooperation with Beijing.
