The meeting highlighted its intent to foster stronger ties with Southeast Asian nations. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, articulated that upholding international law, mutual respect, and peaceful cooperation are pivotal to sustaining both regional and global stability.
Al Busaidi stressed the critical role of dialogue and diplomacy in dispute resolution and confidence-building among countries. He reiterated the necessity of keeping key international waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz, open and secure, which is vital for global navigation and commerce. He pointed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as a cornerstone for maintaining maritime security and safeguarding global trade, food security, and energy supplies.
Oman is advocating for intensified collaboration among coastal nations and those utilizing international shipping lanes. The country cited the Strait of Malacca and Singapore as exemplary models of successful joint maritime security efforts. This call for greater cooperation aims to ensure that international shipping routes remain safe and accessible for all.
Reaffirming its commitment to bolstering maritime partnerships, Oman is keen to enhance its ties with ASEAN member states.
