The economic relationship between Oman and Tanzania has seen a substantial boost as trade has surged from $140 million to $350 million over the last three years. This growth is a testament to the strengthening economic and investment ties between the two nations. Saud Hilal Al Shidhani, Oman’s Ambassador to Tanzania, emphasized the importance of their long-standing historical connections, which have been further reinforced through increased business exchanges and investments in vital sectors. Omani enterprises have notably expanded their operations in Tanzania by participating in trade exhibitions and forming partnerships with local businesses.
One of the significant factors contributing to this burgeoning trade relationship is Tanzania’s strategic position as a crucial entry point to East Africa. The country’s involvement in regional blocs like the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) offers access to broader markets. Recent agreements designed to protect investments and prevent double taxation have spurred interest in sectors such as oil and gas, mining, agriculture, fisheries, and more. These agreements have attracted considerable investment in logistics, airport management, and transport infrastructure as well.
The bilateral economic ties are further strengthened by Tanzanian investors expressing growing interest in Oman’s real estate sector. Future collaborations are anticipated to concentrate on logistics, ports, renewable energy, tourism, food processing, mining, and the development of special economic zones. These areas of focus are expected to significantly enhance the economic dynamics between the two nations.
Looking ahead, Oman and Tanzania are gearing up for the third session of the Oman-Tanzania Joint Committee to be held in Dar es Salaam. This meeting aims to evaluate ongoing projects and identify new opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, Air Tanzania plans to introduce three weekly direct flights between Dar es Salaam and Muscat. This new air link is set to bolster tourism, trade, and business travel, further solidifying the economic partnership between the two countries.
