Oman’s Temperature Extremes Signal Potential Impacts on Energy and Tourism Sectors

In June 2026, Oman experienced a record-breaking heatwave as temperatures soared to 50.4°C in Mahout, marking the highest temperature ever recorded in the country for that month. Meanwhile, Jabal Shams registered a contrastingly low temperature of 11.1°C, highlighting the diverse climatic conditions within Oman. These statistics were part of the latest monthly weather report issued by the country’s Civil Aviation Authority.

Several other locations in Oman also faced intense heat, with Barka, Damaa and Al Tayeen, and Fahud each recording temperatures of 49.4°C. Qarn Al Alam was not far behind, with a peak temperature of 48.4°C. This widespread heatwave underscores the challenges faced by the country during the summer months, as extreme temperatures become a norm in many regions.

Despite the scorching temperatures dominating much of Oman, some areas experienced milder climates. Saiq, for instance, recorded a temperature of 16.8°C, while Al Ashkharah and Jabal Harem noted temperatures of 18.0°C and 18.2°C, respectively. Dhalkut, another cooler spot, saw temperatures hovering around 20.4°C.

Rainfall, however, was primarily concentrated in Dhofar and the mountainous areas of Oman. Dhalkut emerged as the wettest location during June, receiving 55 mm of rain. Jabal Shams followed with 18.4 mm, and Saiq recorded 16.6 mm of precipitation. Other areas like Ibra and Qayroun Hairiti also received rainfall, measuring 12.2 mm and 11.2 mm, respectively. This distribution of rain shows the distinct climatic zones within Oman, where some regions remain dry while others receive a significant amount of rainfall.

The weather data for June paints a vivid picture of Oman’s varied climate, where the stark contrast between extreme heat in most parts and localized rainfall in others illustrates the country’s unique meteorological patterns. These conditions not only impact daily life but also influence agriculture and water resource management across the nation.
