Pakistan Optimistic About Mediation Efforts in Iran-US Tensions

by admin477351

Pakistan is cautiously hopeful about its role in mediating between Iran and the United States, amidst ongoing regional tensions and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. This optimism stems from recent diplomatic initiatives led by Pakistan’s military, including multiple visits to Tehran by Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.

According to military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Munir’s visits to Iran, the latest of which included senior officials from Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, suggest some positive developments. Chaudhry noted that while the situation remains cautiously optimistic, there are influential parties that could still derail diplomatic progress. He refrained from sharing specific details of the discussions or confirming Washington’s stance on these diplomatic missions.

The involvement of Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin during the Tehran visit underscores the regional commitment to addressing the ongoing Iran-US conflict. This aligns with a defense agreement signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye on August 7, which strengthens their collective security by treating an attack on any signatory as an attack on all.

Chaudhry mentioned that the agreement is open to other countries that share the objectives of collective deterrence and regional peace, although any expansion would require the political leadership’s approval from the three founding nations. When questioned about the potential deployment of additional Pakistani troops to Saudi Arabia, Chaudhry stated that such a decision would depend on the security situation and discussions between the two governments.

He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to defending Saudi Arabia and protecting the holy cities of Makkah and Medina, while clarifying that Pakistan is not involved in the conflict in Yemen. The diplomatic efforts by Pakistan come amid rising concerns over the potential for the Iran-US confrontation to further destabilize the Middle East, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in preventing escalation.
