Iran has raised allegations against Qatar, accusing the Gulf state of hindering its attempts to investigate the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amid recent hostilities. Tehran has claimed that these pilots vanished during the conflict, while Qatar has rebutted these allegations, denying any detention of the Iranian airmen. The situation has escalated with Iranian officials urging international intervention to resolve the dispute.
Mohammad Bagherzadeh, a senior official from Iran’s armed forces, stated that a team of experts from the Iranian Air Force has been stalled for months, awaiting authorization to travel to Qatar for a thorough investigation into the incident. He appealed to Doha to grant access for this investigative mission and called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross to help pursue the issue. Iran had earlier reported recovering the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who reportedly perished in an assault linked to the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar.
Despite these claims, Qatar has firmly stood its ground against the accusations. Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, categorically denied that any Iranian pilots were being held by Qatari authorities. He explained that Qatar had initially contacted the pilots after they allegedly breached Qatari airspace. Following unsuccessful attempts to establish communication, Qatar stated that it took defensive actions.
Qatar further reported that its search and rescue teams conducted operations to find the missing pilots and any remains, coordinating with Iran for the transfer of the remains of one pilot that had been recovered. Additionally, the Qatari government mentioned that in April, Iranian officials were invited to send a delegation to Qatar to receive detailed information regarding the search and rescue efforts. However, according to Qatar, there was no response from the Iranian side to this invitation.
This diplomatic friction occurs against a backdrop of ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional powers. The conflict earlier this year has added strain to these relations. Amidst these tensions, Qatar has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation and fostering communication among the involved parties.
