Rydell is best remembered for directing “On Golden Pond” in 1981, a film that brought together legendary actors Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film garnered 10 Academy Award nominations, with acting accolades going to both Henry Fonda and Hepburn. Rydell himself was nominated for Best Director, though the award that year went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.”

Released to both critical and commercial acclaim, “On Golden Pond” achieved significant box-office success, grossing over $119 million worldwide. The film marked Henry Fonda’s final acting role, earning him his only Oscar.
