Iran has issued a warning that it may suspend peace talks with the United States, accusing Israel of breaching a ceasefire agreement through its military actions in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the ceasefire is meant to apply universally, including in Lebanon, and cautioned that any violations would be perceived as a breach of the entire accord. Tehran attributes responsibility to both Israel and the United States for any repercussions stemming from renewed conflicts.
In a statement, US President Donald Trump noted that Washington had not officially received notice from Iran about halting the negotiations. He remarked that a pause could be acceptable, while underlining the US’s intention to maintain its blockade on Iranian ports to avoid escalating military tensions. Meanwhile, efforts to uphold the truce saw Trump engage in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and intermediaries connected to Hezbollah. Lebanon later announced that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a mutual cessation of attacks, including airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs. However, Netanyahu cautioned that Israel would persist in targeting Hezbollah should assaults on Israeli civilians continue.
The situation intensified when Israel issued evacuation alerts for certain areas in Beirut. Iran countered by warning that any significant Israeli offensive on the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs would prompt retaliatory action against targets within Israel. Iranian authorities also accused the United States of not adhering to ceasefire commitments, pointing to ongoing economic pressures and military actions. Tehran has signaled that further negotiations, particularly concerning its nuclear program, will remain stalled until broader security issues are resolved.
This escalating conflict has heightened uncertainty within the region and placed additional pressure on global oil markets. The tensions underscore the fragile nature of the current ceasefire and the complex web of geopolitical interests at play, as efforts to stabilize the situation continue amidst a backdrop of longstanding regional rivalries and international diplomacy.
