Oman is gearing up to introduce an ambitious solar energy initiative next week, known as the “Imtidad” Community Solar Power Stations Programme. Spearheaded by the Public Services Regulation Authority (PSRA) alongside licensed electricity companies, this program is a significant move towards increasing public engagement in renewable energy. It offers an innovative approach for individuals and businesses to harness solar energy benefits without the need for personal solar panel installations.
Participants of the Imtidad programme will receive credits on their electricity bills, derived from solar power generated by community solar stations linked to the national grid. This model is designed to lower energy expenses, promote the use of clean energy, and bolster Oman’s efforts towards a sustainable energy future. The programme’s launch will feature the opening of the Wadi Al Kabir Community Solar Power Station, marking the first project under this initiative and Oman’s debut community-based solar plant. Plans are in place to extend similar projects throughout the nation progressively.
Officials highlight that this initiative is poised to deliver a range of benefits across economic, social, and environmental fronts. By encouraging investments in renewable energy, it aims to bolster local businesses, generate employment opportunities, and enhance energy efficiency. This effort is in line with Oman’s broader strategic goals, which include diversifying the energy mix, reinforcing sustainability, and aligning with the objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
The introduction of community solar projects is expected to make renewable energy options more accessible, particularly for households and businesses without the space or means to install private solar systems. In doing so, the programme contributes to the country’s national clean energy targets, ensuring that a wider segment of the population can partake in and benefit from the shift towards sustainable energy sources.
