Peter Cullen, the iconic voice behind Optimus Prime from Transformers and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at 85. Cullen died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles residence, surrounded by his family, as confirmed in a family statement.
Hailing from Montreal, Cullen embarked on his career through Canadian television and radio before becoming a legendary figure in voice acting. His journey with Optimus Prime began in 1984 with the Transformers animated series, a role he would reprise in seven major films from 2007 to 2023, including various spin-offs. Additionally, Cullen’s association with Eeyore established him as a beloved voice for the gloomy donkey in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous related shows, movies, and games.
Cullen also left his mark in other memorable roles, such as voicing KARR, the villainous twin to KITT in Knight Rider, and creating the eerie clicking of the creature in the 1987 film Predator. He also lent his voice to King Kong in the 1976 remake, showcasing his versatility across genres.
Influenced by his older brother Larry, a former captain in the US Marine Corps, Cullen shaped Optimus Prime with a heroic yet gentle persona, embodying strength without aggression. This portrayal won him critical acclaim, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011. In recognition of his enduring impact, he received a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
